Have you dreamed about living in the charm district of Austin? If so, you can get delirious with excitement, until you get a look at some of your options. The real drawback is that there are no more lots, and all of the existing houses are old. Really old. Even if you find a house that has been professionally remodeled, it is likely too small, has low ceilings, no garage, or a combination of all three. You will give high marks for some of the architectural elements that are planned for the house. Built by Paul and Tanya Streeter of Camelot Custom Homes, the style of the house will have clean lines and lots of windows. Downstairs, floors will be sustainable Brazilian hardwoods. The noticeably large master bedroom is on the main level, along with two additional bedrooms. This is ideal if you have older relatives who visit, and it is imperative if there is any chance you may need to care for your aging parents. If this scenario is a possibility, you will love the study next to these two secondary bedrooms--if your parents do end up staying with you, they cannot stay in their rooms all the time, so this study could be set up as a small living area for these bedrooms. The upscale kitchen will have Shaker-style stained Alder wood cabinets and sleek stainless appliances from European makers, Bosch and Miele. Another appealing feature will be the solarium (see floorplan on page 2). It will be capped with a tower column that extends up through the main roofline and wrapped with glass to usher in beams of soothing natural light. This will make a nice space where you can curl up with a good book or write a letter to an old friend. Here is another elegant solution to a common business-related problem. Has this happened to you? You are on the phone taking care of an important work-related matter, and all of a sudden, Fido has a barking fit, or one of your kids starts screaming about something, or the television is blaring. No such distractions here because the builder has designed a very private study located in the northeast corner of the main level, just off the master bedroom. Even if you just need an hour one evening to get some serious work done, you could plot the takeover of a Fortune-500 company from this office sanctuary. What To Look Forward To If You Live Here Consider this scenario. Say you've had one of those tension-filled weeks at the office. You've been hounded all week by deadlines, meetings, phone calls and emails. You have worked late every night, eaten lunch at your desk and skipped your regular workouts. Then at about two in the afternoon on Friday it happens. You look out of your office window and notice a few things. There is a couple holding hands, someone is walking his dog, or maybe you overhear someone who is leaving work early to go to a concert on Auditorium Shores. Call your sweetie on your cell phone and arrange to meet at the house. Head over to Central Market (it is only 8 blocks from the house!) where you stock up on nothing but comfort food--chips, salsa, cheese, wine and some steaks. As the sun sets, you fire up some romantic music. Grill steaks on the terrace, sip some wine and take in the wonders of a star-filled sky. Ahh, just thinking about it relaxes your breathing. Saturday morning, you can cruise over to the waterfront bakery called Mozart's and begin your day with fresh coffee and a bagel. If, on the other hand, you would rather start your weekend with a nature walk, go out the front door and walk west for just two blocks, and you step onto the hike-and-bike trails that lead all the way to Zilker Park. There are so many things to do in central Austin. Do you like to stop in to the myriad of live music venues on 6th Street? Get dressed up for dinner at Eddie V's? Go to the theater? Or do you put on your Keep Austin Weird T-shirt and catch dinner and a movie at The Alamo Drafthouse? You are living at the epicenter of the art, music, theater and restaurant districts. And the benefits of living this close to UT will have you reeling. For example, you could invite out-of-town friends in on a weekend when the Longhorns are playing and walk to the stadium on game day, or walk to the Frank Irwin Center for basketball games. Have you ever heard of UT's Odyssey program? Taught by some of the University's most renowned professors, these are informal classes for the public on a wide range of topics such as Texas history, the Renaissance, famous female novelists, astronomy, and a recent one titled Islam 101. The building where they hold these classes is about a ten-minute walk from the house. Don't forget that you can take advantage of the Bob Bullock Museum and its IMAX theater. Walk across the street from here, and you are at one of the city's best-kept secrets--The Blanton Museum--now considered world-class with its recent $80,000,000 (you read that correctly--$80-million) worth of improvements. So, here is your chance to snag an almost impossible to find new home that may be in your family for generations. It is big enough that you will not outgrow it. The design includes space for a genuine home-office, first floor accommodations for guests or elder relatives and a 3-car garage, and it is sitting on a noticeably large corner lot.
