If you find you have an instant affection when you step inside, it is no doubt due to the careful planning that goes into each one. Wherever practical, interior walls are removed. Harsh lines are replaced with natural shapes. Surfaces, textures, colors and materials are woven into a seamless patina that is richly organic. And the line between indoor and outdoor spaces is almost unobstructed. There is an undercurrent of balance in these designs that connects with people on a deep and gratifying level. Greenshores is the former Parade-of-Homes neighborhood that is located close-in NW Austin just off 2222 and City Park Rd. Pictured above is the 4,500 square-foot residence at 7105 Malibu Cove. The pie-shaped lot dissolves into its surrounding terrain--scenic land that is teaming with songbirds, squirrels and deer. The lot is 177' down the left side and 198' across the back. To most builders this would simply be a big lot, but this builder used it as an earthbound canvas to create a remarkably appealing and free-flowing space. Some of these clues are evident as you approach the front door. The foyer is a dramatic, light-catching, rotunda-shaped two-story tower accented with a dome-shaped ceiling. Stand in this entry and you have three directions you can go. Trailing off in symmetrically-opposing directions are interesting-looking halls that bend around and out of sight. In each of these opposing wings of the house you will find large, private bedrooms--each with its own bath. However, your eye will likely be pulled straight ahead by all of the architectural features you get glimpses of. Intentionally organized in this fashion, the house unfolds in bigger and bigger visual gulps as you walk through. As you enter, it is likely that the first surprise space you will be drawn to is the rustic room on your left. Again, it discloses only a hint at first. The room is defined by its materials--you enter through a floor-to-ceiling stone wall, but the real visual treat is the gateway into this room. There are two huge, heavy, custom-made well-dressed wooden panel doors that are mounted into the stone wall on iron runners--they are, in essence, jumbo-sized, exposed pocket doors. So, here you begin to see how the builder is orchestrating organic surfaces and weaving them together. You have a roughly-finished stone wall and wooden doors with an aged patina to them. Now, you slide these back to expose what the builder confesses is a man's room. This long room is finished with Mesquite wood floors, stone walls and an extra tall ceiling. Mesquite is indigenous to central Texas--it is much more expensive than regular hardwoods because it is so hard. The wood grain has a tight, burled appearance, with a slight burgundy tone to it. No doubt, this room will make you feel like you have stepped into a Texas ranch house. It is intended to serve two purposes--as an office and a media room. Keep in mind that this is a single story floorplan, and it just keeps unfolding in dramatic fashion as you get deeper inside. As you make that final turn into the main section of the house you may be ready to give the builder a check and a hug. Incredible! It is a case study for how to use architecture to light the senses on fire. Consider this fascinating detail. You can walk into some big houses, and the box-like footprint means the entire back wall simply spans across from one corner to the other in a straight line. The back wall here makes nineteen different turns (look at the floorplan). Most of these walls sections are glass-lined. You would never use this much glass on an ordinary house because it would create a privacy issue, but here it delivers a constant and calming reminder that you are living on the edge of wilderness terrain. Glass doors built into this ribbon wall in back allow you to pass easily between indoor and outdoor spaces. Wait until you see the house when you are standing in the kitchen. It is the nerve center and hub for the entire house. There are no doors to enter, the walls intentionally do not connect to the ceiling, and all of the woodwork in the kitchen is made to resemble furniture pieces. One of the keynote visuals in the kitchen is a curved, cantina-style sit-down bar. It is as big as some you have seen in restaurants. The bar is decorated with highly-reflective glass tiles. Close your eyes, and you can imagine the house being filled with the laughter of friends and family. You can almost hear the sound of ice swirling in the glasses. Two other spaces are just as fascinating. In total, there are four bedrooms, but the fourth bedroom is set up in the back wing of the house. It includes a bedroom, small living area with kitchenette, poolside terrace, separate entrance and a connecting door to the third garage. If there is any chance you may need space to take care of aging parents, this layout works perfectly. The master bedroom will also get high ratings. It is privately set in the back left corner. It has a dual view of the pool and nature setting in back. You can open the windows and go to sleep to the sound of the waterfall in the pool. The bath area is an absolute knockout--complete with his and her's sections, multicolored stone walls and floors, and--in spa-like fashion--open bins for towels. Attention romantic couples: When's the last time you took a shower with your sweetie? It is encouraged here by the size of the shower and the two rainforest style shower heads. But there is a final surprise--a Japanese-style bath. And speaking of relaxing, the terrace and pool setting here will surpass anything you have seen elsewhere. The organically shaped, pond-like pool functions as both pool and water element. If you have ever gone to one of those resorts that includes its own cabana and private pool, it is the same sensation you get here. The uses are endless. For example, imagine you want to wake up in an invigorating fashion. Pretend you are looking forward to a great weekend. You sit up in bed on Saturday morning, and what's that, you hear birds singing. You glance out and notice several deer are strolling across the back yard. You get in one big stretch, you peel back the sheets, you stride through the back glass door, one step, then another as you dash for the pool, and wham!, you slice right into the water. Oh my, at night the mood is totally transforming. You can sip a glass of wine while you take in the wonders of a star-filled sky. Light some floating candles for the pool and toss flower petals into the water. Grill steaks outdoors. Ahh, just thinking about it eases your breathing doesn't it? There is also a private waterfront park on Lake Austin that is walking distance. You can fish, launch a boat or use the day dock. Imagine all of this, yet this house is so close-in. If the new, $1,099,000 price is right for you, trust your impulse to buy this unique residence. Here is your chance to buy a one-story with built-in guest house, 3-car garage, pool, scenic setting wrapped by greenbelt terrain, on a huge lot in a close-to-town location that has lake access.
